On the next picture you can see what the initially planned card looks like.
Instead to be in line, the 4 GPUs should have been grouped by pair to waste less space. First boot Now it's time for a dreaded moment: We were quite stressed because the card could be destroyed at this point and then the only solution would be Voodoo 5 WinXP exile to Patagonia with our friends Voodoo 5 WinXP penguins for the rest of our lifes to avoid an horrible death, slain by furious 3dfx fans.
First of all let's look at our PSU, this Enermax model has served us for years now and we are very happy with it.
It used only one Voodoo 5 WinXP chip and did not need an additional power connection. Voodoo 5 [ edit ] The Voodoo 5 comes in three flavors: Because the card used more power than the AGP specification allowed for, a special power supply called Voodoo Volts had to be included with it.
This would have been an external device that would connect to an AC outlet. Most of the prototype cards utilized a standard internal Voodoo 5 WinXP supply molex power connector.
With regards to performance, little was known until enthusiasts were able to get pre-release hardware and run tests on it. The results showed that the Voodoo 5 outperformed the GeForce 2 Ultra and Radeonwhich were the fastest iterations of the GeForce 2 and Radeon Voodoo 5 WinXP lines, respectively.
It was rumored that GeForce 2 Ultra was intended to Voodoo 5 WinXP 3dfx taking the lead with their Voodoo 5 At the time nVidia was already using DDR memory since 2 generation of GeForce cards and 3dfx really should have done the same. In fact the Voodoo 5 was initially planned to work with memory clocked at MHz which was a very high frequency for SDR memory at the time and the costs were thus high. It would have been a better idea to use "slow" DDR instead of "fast" SDR memory, the cost was probably about the same with much less availability problems.
Out test card has 16 8MB memory chips 8 on Voodoo 5 WinXP side clocked at 6ns MHz but some earlier prototypes used 5. Our card is a relatively advanced prototype revision A but we can clearly see thet Voodoo 5 WinXP power is provided through an internal molex connector instead of the planned external power supply on the final model. A all used the same Voodoo Volts, they all had a power output of 60 watts, in when Hank Semenec applied the PCI Rework, he was able to fix the issue 3dfx was facing, with this fix all FSAA modes worked on many motherboards but even so, there are still a limited amount of motherboards that supports the Voodoo5you can check them out here: Just under them world owner lists.

The PCI traces do not have reliable signal return, it is like transmitting signal on Voodoo 5 WinXP single wire without a ground reference. The most noted issue was board instability when running in anti-aliasing modes, the noise on the bus would cause crashes and lockups.
One attempted fix was to lower the VSA speeds from mhz to mhz, unfortunately this still did not address the issue and the problem remained. There is a workaround for this called "PCI-rework" which can be found here.

Our card has been modified this way and was completely stable during our tests. As far as we know there are around Voodoo 5 models in the world and around 30 working ones.
On the next picture we can see the unused external power connector and the HiNT bridge which is the biggest death cause for the Voodoo 5 cards in the world. On some motherboards this chip can be destroyed by a Voodoo 5 WinXP during the boot process and this kills the whole card.
